What Is a Korean “Scalp Scaler”? How to Use It and How Often
In Korea, “scalers” that remove dead skin cells and sebum from the scalp before shampooing are popular. They come in liquid and gel types.
Basic Usage
- Apply to the dry scalp along each part
- Massage gently with the pads of your fingers

In Korean, these scalp-cleansing and exfoliating products are called “두피 스케일러” (scalp scaler) or “두피 스케일링” (scalp scaling). They’re used to thoroughly remove sebum and styling products that shampoo alone may leave behind. Some contain scrub particles, acids, or menthol, and the level of stimulation varies by product.
As a basic guideline, use one before shampooing, after wetting your hair and scalp. Apply it along your part, gently work it in with the pads of your fingers, follow the stated leave-on time, and rinse thoroughly. Avoid using your nails or rubbing the particles in forcefully. Don’t use it if you have cuts, redness, or itching.
Start with about once every two weeks. If your scalp tends to be dry, use it about once a month. Even if you’re concerned about sebum or styling products, use once a week at most as a general guideline, and stop if you experience tightness or stinging. It’s not a substitute for daily shampooing.
