Waiting between skincare layers: necessary or a waste of your morning?
Some routines tell you to wait a minute or more after every step. Others say just keep going. So who is right?
When a short pause often helps
- Before sunscreen: letting the layers underneath settle helps the sunscreen form an even film instead of pilling or sliding
- Water-heavy layers under silicone-heavy ones: rushing is a common cause of pilling
- Strong actives: some people wait after an acid or retinoid to reduce stinging from what comes next
When waiting rarely matters
- Thin toners, essences and hydrating serums; these can usually be patted in back to back
- Products designed to be layered as a set
What people on skincare forums do in practice
- Brush teeth or make coffee between serum and sunscreen
- Use less product per layer so each absorbs faster
- If something pills, change the order or amount before blaming the product
Do you wait between steps, and does it change anything for you?
