Patch testing: is one swipe on your wrist really enough?
"I tried it on my wrist and it was fine" is something you hear a lot. But facial skin is thinner and reacts differently, so people with sensitive skin tend to share a more thorough routine.
The approach many use
- Where: behind the ear, under the jawline, or a small patch at the edge of the face
- How long: not once but several days in a row, applied the way you normally would
- One at a time: testing two new products together means you will never know which one it was
- Rinse-offs: do not leave a cleanser on; massage and rinse as usual
Stop if you notice
- Itching, a bumpy rash, swelling or burning that keeps going
- Redness spreading beyond the test area
Also, passing a patch test does not guarantee the whole face will be fine. If reactions keep happening, ask a dermatologist about allergy testing.
Do you patch test new products? Where do you do it?
