Traveling to Korea in winter: what your skin will ask for

Winter in Seoul is cold and very dry, and indoor heating makes it worse. Many people notice their skin feeling tight from the very first day.

The combination of cold wind and indoor heating often leaves skin feeling tight, so it’s a good idea to bring a short, familiar routine rather than trying five new things on your trip. Before heading out, use moisturizer and sunscreen; on the plane and in your room, a simple cream may be more useful than lots of layers of toner. Look for humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid and lipids such as ceramides. If your skin gets irritated easily, avoid strong exfoliants and new retinoids during the trip.

In Korea, you can ask for 보습 크림 (boseup keurim, moisturizer) or 립밤 (ripbam, lip balm). A mask doesn’t replace cream, although it may be useful if you already know your skin tolerates it. For the cold, a scarf and gloves also count as part of your skincare plan; not everything can be fixed in the Olive Young aisle.
