Lower concentrations can be used safely at home with adequate neutralization. Overuse or high concentrations may cause mild irritation or photosensitivity, so sun protection is recommended after use. Citric Acid peels are considered to have a better safety margin with fewer side effects compared to other AHAs like glycolic acid.

It also has antioxidant properties that protect against environmental damage and oxidative stress. Citric Acid helps brighten the skin by fading dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven tone by inhibiting melanin production.
